Weatherization Stimulates Economy

CADC will invest over $6 million in weatherization and energy efficiency efforts as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The funds will help more low-income families save hundreds of dollars every year on their energy bills, and do its part in creation of jobs.

“At a time when the Arkansans are suffering from job lay-offs and cutbacks, CADC is doing its part to jump-start the local economy,” said Larry Cogburn, executive director of CADC.  “Each household that applies for help will receive up to $6,500 in home energy efficiency improvements through Weatherization. Families can expect to save as much as $400 a year on their utility bills.”

Cogburn goes on to say that more families are now eligible for Weatherization. The service is free to those who meet certain income guidelines - up to 200% of the federal poverty level.

“That basically means that a one-person household must make less than $21,660 a year to qualify.  For each additional family member, they should add $7,480 to their annual income to determine eligibility.”

Weatherization does computerized energy audits and uses other advanced technology to help people make their homes energy efficient. By reducing the energy bills of low-income families, weatherization liberates funds for spending on other things, like medicine or food.  The program also impacts job growth and economic development.

CADC operates the program in Calhoun, Clark, Columbia, Dallas, Hot Spring, Lonoke, Montgomery, Ouachita, Pike, Pulaski, Saline, and Union Counties as part of its overall effort to help people of low income gain the basic necessities and attain economic self-sufficiency. Nationwide, Weatherization serves more than 5.6 million low income families. In 2008, CADC served 294 low income families.

Applications for Weatherization can be made at any CADC office, or call 501-778-1133.
